If you export or import goods, sooner or later you’ll encounter terms like EXW, FOB, CIF, or DDP. These are Incoterms – international trade rules that specify:
who pays for what and who is responsible for what in international transactions.
What are Incoterms?
Incoterms®️ (International Commercial Terms) is a set of rules developed by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) that standardizes the terms of delivery of goods worldwide.
What do Incoterms regulate?
Thanks to Incoterms, you know:
✔️ who organizes the transport,
✔️ who bears the costs,
✔️ who is responsible for the goods at each stage,
✔️ who handles customs clearance and insurance,
✔️ where the seller’s responsibility ends and the buyer’s begins.
Examples and differences:
EXW (Ex Works) – the buyer organizes everything from the seller’s warehouse. The seller only provides the goods.
FOB (Free On Board) – the seller delivers the goods to the ship at the port of shipment. From that point on, all responsibility and costs pass to the buyer.
CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) – the seller pays for transportation and insurance to the destination port, but the risk passes upon loading.
DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) – the seller assumes everything: transportation, customs duties, taxes, and delivery to the recipient. The buyer does not have to do anything.
Why is it so important?
A poor understanding of Incoterms can lead to:
disputes over liability for damaged goods,
unplanned costs for the buyer,
customs clearance delays,
transport insurance issues.
If you’re unsure which Incoterm to choose, contact us. We’ll advise you to protect your interests and ensure a smooth transaction, regardless of the country or industry.
