Global sea freight under pressure

What Is Really Happening on Global Container Routes?

While many expected spring to bring some relief to the logistics sector, April delivered further tensions instead. We’re back with a new overview of events that are having a real impact on the TSL industry. What has changed?

USA – China: Tariffs Back in the Spotlight
New U.S. tariffs (up to 145% on goods from China) triggered a response from Beijing — China introduced retaliatory duties, and the U.S. replied with further increases. The European Union is opting for dialogue. The result? Growing uncertainty and an increasing risk of a trade war.

Decline in Container Transport
According to Drewry, global container throughput may fall by 1% in 2025 — a rare occurrence. The most severe decline is expected on the China–USA route (up to -40%). Carriers are reacting by suspending services, reducing capacity, and defending freight rates.

Polish Logistics on the Rise
The Port of Gdańsk reports a record result: +17% TEU in Q1! Gdynia has debuted as a deep-sea port and has joined the map of direct connections with the Far East. Poland is benefiting from the geopolitical redirection of cargo flows.

Carriers Reorganize Services and Alliances
New routes (e.g. Asia–Latin America), changes in port calls, the end of the 2M alliance, and new partnerships (Maersk + Hapag-Lloyd). For ports, this means both opportunity and the risk of losing volumes. An intense battle for market position is underway.

Antwerp Overtakes Rotterdam
For the first time in history, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges has surpassed Rotterdam in container throughput. This marks a symbol of growing competition and shifting trade routes in Europe.

Which of these changes will have the biggest impact on your business?
Let us know — we’re happy to discuss it. Contrary to appearances, this may turn out to be an opportunity.
